Leave One Ring Open

Try an uncolored band as part of a circular design.

Find a pattern with clear bands

Suggested time: Five to ten minutes, with no requirement to complete the pattern.

Choose a circular pattern whose rings are easy to distinguish. If you prefer a grid, you can use a row instead of a ring.

Select one band to leave uncolored for now. It can be close to the center or near the outside edge.

Add color on either side

Color a few shapes on one side of the open band. Then add color on the other side. Use the same color or try two different ones.

Look at the pattern at your usual viewing size. Notice the boundary between the colored shapes and the open space. Does the gap stand out? Does it make the neighboring areas look more separate?

You do not need to find a deeper meaning in the gap. You are exploring what it looks like.

Make your own ending

Keep the band open, fill part of it, or leave that decision for another day. All three are available endings.

If you want a reflection prompt, try: “What did I like about leaving this part undecided?” You can also simply note that you preferred more color.
