One Pattern, Three Color Jobs

Give three colors simple roles, then try them in a small repeating pattern.

Start with one small group

Suggested time: About five minutes; finish sooner or continue if you prefer.

Choose a pattern with a few repeated shapes. Look for a group you can see comfortably: a flower and its leaves, a set of tiles, or a cluster of circles.

Pick three colors you would like to use. They do not need to match a mood or follow a theme.

Give each color a job

Use the first color for the largest shape in your group. Use the second for a neighboring shape. Save the third for a small detail.

For example, try pale blue petals, darker blue leaves, and an orange center. Substitute any colors you prefer.

Repeat those roles in the next group. Before adding another color, look at the two groups together. Is there a part you want to repeat, or one choice you want to change?

End with one observation

You can stop after two groups. The rest of the page can wait.

Complete this sentence in your head or in a note: “The color combination I want to use again is…” If none of them appeals to you, name one combination you want to try next.
