Nothing to Write? Try These 5 Drawing Prompts

Try five simple drawing prompts when a blank journal feels difficult. Use lines, colors, and shapes on paper or your phone. No drawing experience needed.

Start with a mark, not a sentence

You open a journal and nothing comes out. You might be tired, distracted, or simply not in the mood to write. You do not need to turn the day into a tidy story. Pick one prompt below and make a small drawing instead.

A pen and scrap of paper are enough. On a phone, use any drawing tool you already have. There is no score, required color, or finished picture to aim for.

1. Draw today as weather

Make a cloud, a patch of sunshine, a line of rain, or a mixture. Leave out the forecast: you are drawing this moment, not predicting tomorrow. If you want, add one word beside it.

2. Give one moment a color

Think of a small part of the day: a conversation, a walk, a meal. Choose a color you associate with it and make a shape. Your choice does not have a universal meaning. Blue can be quiet, busy, familiar, or simply your favorite.

3. Make a line that matches your pace

Draw a line across the page. It can loop, stop, zigzag, or leave a gap. Ask yourself whether you want the next line to move the same way. You can stop after one.

4. Draw a place to pause

Sketch a chair, a window, a tree, or an imaginary corner. Use basic shapes. Add one detail you would like there: a mug, a plant, a blanket. It does not need perspective or shading.

5. Leave some room

Draw a few shapes and deliberately leave part of the page empty. A drawing does not need to fill its frame. If you are using a coloring template, you can leave parts uncolored too.

Look back without decoding yourself

Try asking, “What do I notice?” or “Which part did I enjoy making?” You can give the drawing a date or a short title. You do not have to identify an emotion or reach a conclusion.

Colors and shapes are not a diagnosis. This is a creative prompt, not art therapy or a test of your mental state. If reflection feels uncomfortable, put the drawing aside and do something else.

Keep the next step small

Save the prompt you liked and return when it is useful. Missing a day does not erase anything. Paper works; if you prefer drawing on your iPhone or iPad, you can explore MoodMirror.
